Natural spider silk is well known by its high toughness through its simultaneous high strength and elongation, which makes it an excellent material for many applications in apparel, automotive, defense and space industries. However, due to the unique living habits of spiders and the low silk productivity, it is very difficult to realize the mass production of natural spider silk, thus artificial spider silk has long been a dream of many scientists and major industries. Start-ups in USA, Japan and Germany began to use biosynthetic methods (genetic engineering) to produce silk proteins, then make artificial spider silks, but nobody is so far successful because proteins so produced cannot be self-assembled into natural structures as exist in natural spider silk, thus they have extremely poor wet performance including low strength, high shrinkage, irreversible deformation, yellowing, reduced modulus etc.
We deal with the above problem by using a chemical approach. We have developed a technology to make a bionic polymer which can lead to the spider silk like high
performance of super toughness. This technology is scalable for mass production for achieving high performance biomimetic spider silk, which can be used for developing high-performance materials such as textiles. After that we will cooperate with enterprises or institutions to start high-end customization business and expand the market of artificial silk products in parachutes, high-end clothing and other aspects.
