The Mortis and Tenon

Design Concept: This collection draws inspiration from the core wisdom of traditional Chinese architecture—Mortise and Tenon joinery. In an era without nails or glue, artisans relied on precise calculation and skillful cutting to interlock wooden components seamlessly, creating magnificent structures that have endured for thousands of years. The philosophy behind this ancient technique—emphasising structure, stability, and connection—forms the foundation of this work.

Design Deconstruction: The silhouette and garment details mimic the logic of mortise and tenon joinery. Through angled, interlocking panels, and geometric details reminiscent of tenon, the design process of constructing a garment is translated into visual art.. Each connection embodies not only structural integrity but also the design’s inherent load-bearing essence.

The colour palette is inspired by the ancient wisdom of sourcing natural materials. Using natural dyeing techniques, various plants—such as butterfly pea flowers, gromwell, and pagoda tree buds—are employed as dyes. Through mordant-driven chemical transformations, historically resonant hues are extracted, enhancing the thematic cohesion of the garments and evoking a profound sense of heritage.
