白地市場分析(white space analysis)顯示新興物料的增長和盈利能力正緊貼替代蛋白
(2021年11月4日)The Material Innovation Initiative (MII) 是一家來自物料業的非牟利智庫。他們聯同可持續農業糧食、紡織和時裝創新行業的投資基金和生態系統建立者南豐作坊,發表了一份關於物料行業的分析報告,詳述不含動物成分的可持續皮革、羽絨、羊毛、絲綢、皮草和稀有皮革的「白地市場」機遇(white space opportunities)。
MII的科學總裁Sydney Gladman博士指:「我們的目標是展示在這個新興行業中未被充分採用、而又擁有的巨大影響力的科研成果。這些『白地』並非集中在單一產品和市場上,它們將在整個新興物料行業內、外產生漣漪效應。」
南豐作坊留意到新興物料行業一如十年前的替代蛋白行業,充滿著未被開發的機遇。創新者和投資者正伺機物色像Beyond Meat 和Impossible Foods般具顛覆性創新的新興物料公司,期待在日後市值過億時收割豐厚的成果。
南豐作坊研究團隊的Angus Tsang說:「我們很高興有機會與Material Innovation Initiative聯手探討新興物料行業內未被開發的潛力。消費者對可持續發展不斷提升的關注推動了新興物料行業的發展;為了保持著這股動力,現在是時候向更廣泛的群體介紹物料創新。」
MII的共同創辦人Nicole Rawling 和Stephanie Downs都是來自替代蛋白領域的專家。Nicole Rawling補充說:「我和Stephanie都見證過這種行業轉變。對我們而言,今天物料行業的發展可說是似曾相識。」
MII和南豐作坊在這份分析報告中,定義「白地」(white spaces)為在促進專注研發的工作,及創造新興科技和公司以滿足新興生態系統中未被滿足的需求方面擁有關鍵機遇的領域。
最顯著的白地市場都是皮革以外的物料:由於業內大約三分之二的公司都在生產新興皮革,令絲綢、羊毛、羽絨、皮草和野生皮革的創新成果受到局限。但這也為一些物料 —— 特別是皮草和絲綢 —— 提供了許多有利可圖的機遇。

根據聯合國的資料,工業化畜牧業是導致當今多個嚴峻問題的主因,包括:氣候改變、生物多樣化流失、環境退化、空氣和水污染、過度浪費、公共健康危機及虐待動物。另外,至少三分之二的品牌的可持續策略都跟其原材料選擇有關,可見品牌需要替代品取代現在市面上的動物物料,以幫助他們達至可持續目標。
現在機遇處處,新興服裝品牌Pangaia的創新總裁Amanda Parkes博士簡明扼要:「我們需要大部分人把事情做得更好,而非只有一小撮人把事情做到完美。」
