Responsibilities:

  • Work with the CSO, CEO and external patent attorneys to develop and implement the Company’s intellectual property strategy.
  • Manage communications with and help direct the activities of outside counsel.
  • Assist in the preparation, filing and prosecution of domestic and foreign patent applications, including the preparation of arguments in response to office actions.
  • Work with R&D to identify and assess the patentability of new inventions; assist in drafting and reviewing related invention disclosures.
  • Review and prepare freedom-to-operate opinions in collaboration with outside counsel in relation to new product ideas and developments coming from the R&D group.
  • Provide periodic training to Company employees regarding the protection of intellectual property.
  • Maintain, update and set policies & systems for internal management of intellectual property.
  • Review and propose IP expenditure as part of the budgeting process. Manage IP budget.
  • Combine legal and technical knowledge with business understanding in order to provide high-level guidance. Assist with corporate work and other tasks, including reviewing contract clauses related to IP rights and contribute to preparation of investor materials.

Requirements:

  • A Ph.D. in a life science discipline, preferably in plant biochemistry, industrial biotechnology or bioorganic chemistry.
  • Experience in a laboratory setting with a developed understanding of empirical validation of scientific concepts as well as have a strong understanding of the scientific and technological fields that the Company works in.
  • A desire to communicate scientific concepts and data in writing exemplified by having several 1st author scientific papers in high ranking journals and / or demonstrable experience in patent drafting.
  • Some formal intellectual property training, including knowledge of the patent system in the UK, EU and USA, would be useful, but not essential.
  • Ability to develop strategic and tactical plans necessary to provide strong IP positions for the Company’s technology/products and clearly articulate these to senior management.
  • Experience in patent searching using various free (google patents, USPTO) and subscription-based tools (e.g. PatSnap, PatBase, Derwent, etc.), and the subsequent review of results, is desirable but not essential.
  • Extremely thorough and detail-oriented. Evidence of organizational, planning, multi-tasking, and prioritization skills in order to meet strict deadlines.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and strong analytical and problem identifying/solving skills.
  • Ability to accurately and effectively express yourself in writing and orally.
  • Conscientious, self-motivated and diligent. Work professionally and confidentially with sensitive material.
  • Strong work ethic and a team player.

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary (£48,000-55,000 for the right candidate, dependent on experience) plus options package.
  • Full-time – 37.5 hours / week (Monday – Friday, 09:00 – 17:30). This role is amenable to hybrid working.
