Colorifix was founded by two synthetic biologists who were developing biological sensors to monitor heavy metal contamination in drinking water in rural Nepal.
While testing these sensors in Kathmandu, Jim and Orr began to learn about the enormous impact of the dyeing industry on water and human health; and realised that, rather than simply monitoring the problem, they had the tools to solve it. With some creativity and a bit of luck, Colorifix was founded in 2016.
The Fermentation Scientist will be part of a team supporting research and development and day-to-day operations of Colorifix’s proprietary processes involving fermentation at its R&D site in Norwich. As part of the Colorifix cross-site Fermentation Working Group this role will also involve excellent communication of plans, results and tech transfer to colleagues across sites.
The role requires a sound knowledge of fermentation processes (batch, fed-batch, continuous), high competency in aseptic technique and the handling and management of Class 1 genetically modified bacteria and yeast. The Fermentation Scientist will also be responsible for the design and coordination of experiments using small scale fermenters. The position will require close working with other Divisions to help coordinate fermentation derived work packages in active projects.
Assigned tasks will include, support and characterization of working/master cell banks and fermentation seed trains, media preparations and fermentor set up, running and data collection, underpinned with quality control measures. The Fermentation Scientist will also be expected to contribute to the maintenance and efficient running of the fermentation suite with good laboratory practice. The nature of the work will mean that from time to time this may include working over a weekend and with flexible hours and occasionally at Colorifix’s Cambridge site.
